For over twenty years, I’ve had the privilege and pleasure of presenting the weekly two hour session of Folk Club on BBC Radio Ulster.
It’s been a wonderful journey, sharing great music, songs and stories with listeners from close to home and from all over the world.
I’ve been lucky enough to observe how folk music travels so well, whether it’s floating on the airwaves, onto concert stages or into small intimate sessions where fiddlers in cosy corners struggle for operational elbow space!
In recent times my own musical travels have taken me in ever widening circles and in the months ahead there are gigs planned for Switzerland, Portugal, and New Zealand. .
Like the fiddler in the corner, it’s becoming more difficult to find the space and time to give the programme the attention that I’ve always tried to give it and, for that reason, I have decided to step back from presenting Folk Club.
I know it’s the right decision but it hasn’t been an easy one, I love the job and I have made so many good friends along the way.
I cannot give enough thanks to the listeners, musicians and BBC colleagues for their friendship. encouragement and support over the past twenty five years.
I’m very glad to say that the programme continues on Sunday nights in the capable hands of Lynette Fay.
I hope we can all keep in touch and you’d never know when or where we might meet again.
In the meantime, please keep an eye out for gigs coming your way here, it would be great to see you! http://www.columsands.com/gigs.html
